One of the common misconceptions regarding anal fissures, or the cuts or tears in the thin lining of the anus or anal canal, is that only adults who practice anal sex are susceptible to it. Medical studies have since debunked this, revealing that although it is the adults between 20 to 40 years old who are most likely to get them, anal fissures can occur to anyone at any age, even to a week-old baby.

Anal fissures are caused by any trauma or injury that stretches the anal canal ranging from chronic constipation and prolonged diarrhea to childbirth. In some cases, the practices of anal sex and/or putting objects into the anus tend to overstretch the skin and also cause the fissure. That alone is a fact to consider regarding the question. In the most logical approach, it doesn’t make sense to want to do something that is known to cause the condition one already has.

Although pain and bleeding in the anus are some of the most common symptoms attributed to anal fissures, extreme cases also include the discharge of pus and dysuria or the discomfort one feels when urinating. This is another point to consider. People suffering the condition should seek the help of a doctor or a specialist when symptoms like these start to occur.

The most common advice the doctors and health specialists give is to hold off on more anal sex and penetration until the current bleeding and discomfort are completely gone. The reason that abstinence is strongly advised is not merely because it causes the fissure, but rather, anal sex could just cause more irritation and infection to an already existing wound.

Even though one could still have anal sex while suffering through the fissures, several risks could arise. A prominent disadvantage is that it could put one at risk of infections. The painful anal tears not only make it easier for infections to reach the bloodstream but also facilitate in the transmission and spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like gonorrhea, herpes, and even HIV.

Safety precautions should then be observed and practiced when having anal sex with the unhealed fissures. The commonly advised and probably the easiest method is the regular use of condoms whenever there’s an instance of sexual penetration. Another well-known practice is the application of lubricants before and during anal penetration. However, one has to use lubricants that are condom compatible so that they won’t get to tear the condoms and defeat its purpose.

While there is no definite answer as to whether or not it is safe to have anal sex while suffering from anal fissure, it is safe to assume that doing so without taking extra precautions would simply worsen the condition, if not add to the list of health risks. It is also said that anal sex for a person suffering from an anal fissure becomes more physically exhausting than usual. An anal fissure is, after all, an open wound. To do anything that would irritate such internal wounds would do nothing but cause more pain than necessary.
